Phishing – What it is and how to avoid it

what is phishing

What is Phishing?
You get an email sent to you pretending to be from a reputable organisation. They’ll usually contain a link for you to click on or a phone number to call, both of which are there in order to get personal details from you – passwords, card details, or just get you to call a premium rate number (numbers starting with 09). ┬áThese are phishing emails.

What can you do to stop it?

  • Think. NEVER give your password or pin number to anyone. EVER. No matter how convincing they sound.
  • Don’t follow links in emails. Instead, go to the official website and log in as you normally would.
  • Same with phone numbers – find out the number for the organisation and call that instead.

Simple as that. To help defend against phishing you can also install internet security software such as BitDefender
INTERNET SECURITY software, as opposed to Anti Virus alone, will warn you when you try to access these fraudulent sites.
